Welcome to Winchester, VA!
The City of Winchester is located in Frederick County, which borders
Maryland and West Virginia, in the Shenandoah Valley. Winchester is the
northernmost community in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Winchester was the first settlement and first chartered city west of the Blue
Ridge (1752). Originally called Frederick Town after the father of King George III,
Winchester was renamed after the ancient capital of England by Col. James Wood, the
city's founder. Due to its strategic location, Winchester played a major role in all
the wars fought on U.S. soil.
